Peer-reviewed articles are written by experts for an academic audience and include citations and references. Popular articles are written for the general public, usually by journalists or non-specialists, and are found in magazines, newspapers, or websites without in-depth citations.
When searching library databases, look for a filter/limited labeled "Peer Reviewed." That will give you a list of articles that are scholarly in nature.
